Thiess Pty Ltd
Bruce Munro was appointed Thiess Managing Director in September 2011.
A 1974 graduate from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Bruce has held various positions within the Thiess Group including Chief Executive Mining – a position he has held since January 2010.
He joined Thiess in 1986 as a Project Manager with the company's construction business in Indonesia before being appointed Country Manager for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. He then returned as Manager for the construction of a major telecommunications project in Indonesia.
In 1999 he was appointed President Director of PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia – a roll he held for eight years. Under his leadership, the Indonesian business underwent major growth and won several major mining and construction contracts which saw the business expand from US$130 million annual turnover to US$500 million per year.
In August 2007, Bruce was promoted to Executive General Manager Asia, where he focused on Thiess' growing Asian interests and in particular, the opportunities in India. His hard work in India paid off when Thiess was awarded a $5.5 billion coal mining contract in 2010. It was one of the first coal mining contracts ever awarded to a foreign contractor and the largest ever secured by a Leighton Holdings company.
Bruce has been working in the construction and mining industries for 36 years. His work has encompassed a range of vital infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, marine facilities and heavy civil engineering construction and industrial buildings throughout Australia, South East Asia and India.
He has a long history with Leighton Holdings having worked with Leighton Asia for two years and Leighton Contractors for four years.
Bruce is passionate about Thiess' history and is determined to continue nurturing a culture of safety, innovation and best practice across the company. He has a strong commitment to the environment, community and workplace relations.
He is also a Non-Executive Director on the board of Sedgman – a leading provider of minerals processing and associated infrastructure solutions to the global resources industry. Thiess is also an important shareholder in Sedgman.
Bruce is also on the Boards of the Minerals Council of Australia and Australian Constructors Association and Queensland Chair of the Australia Indonesia Business Council.
